Project & Sign Writing Case Studies
Landells Signs has undertaken a diverse range of assignments. Case studies that reflect some challenging elements of meeting client needs are presented below.National Multiple Site Rollout
Description:The project required a national roll out of internal signage to over 600 separate locations.
This presented a variety of challenges including:
- variations in individual site requirements
- production scheduling
- logistics
Detailed planning and project management were key factors in ensuring that the project ran smoothly.
In-house production control systems were used extensively to track the elements of work in progress. Key controls included:
- manufacturing quality review and inspection
- tracking production against schedule
- confirmation of product shipment inventory against destination.
Complex Installation
Description:
The project called for the installation of external signage to a store located on an extremely busy major road.
The location presented difficulties in that:- power lines were in the way, and required that power be disconnected
- minimal disruption to traffic was required
- limited time was available to minimise the impact on traffic.
Outcomes:
The success of the project was contingent on ensuring that co-ordination with all relevant authorities was undertaken and necessary permits obtained.
Key elements in ensuring smooth project completion were:
- allowing sufficient lead time for gaining approvals
- identifying all relevant parties requiring co-ordination (equipment and service providers - including transport, cranes and structural services)
- attention to relevant aspects of occupational health and safety
The job was successfully completed in two 12 hours shifts on a single weekend.
Emergency Response
Description:
Internal signage for premises was being undertaken by Landells Signs and external signage by another party. The day before opening the client learnt that the external signage would not be installed.
A request was put to Landells Signs for provision of the signage with a lead time of 12 hours, for what would usually be a job with four weeks lead time.

Outcomes:
The client agreed to the provision of temporary signage to tide them over until the permanent signage could be installed.
Temporary signage was prepared and installed by the required deadline.
This was possible because:
- the extent of in-house qualified staff meant that external contractors were not required for key operations
- comprehensive inventory and good relationships with raw materials suppliers enabled the raw materials required to be sourced quickly
- highly committed staff worked to address the emergency requirements.
Change Of Technology
Description:
The client was seeking to move away using neon signs due to maintenance problems and also a change in direction for corporate branding.
There were issues with finding suitable alternative signage that was acceptable to the client and that also met operational needs.
Outcomes:
The preferred solution was to use wide format printing. The client raised concerns about durability.
The decisions was made to install Weathertex signage. This presented issues with dimension limitations and fixing issues (particularly the number of joins required for the size of sign).
In time, trials of wide format digital printed signs were undertaken. The concerns regarding durability of these signs were resolved by using appropriate base material and printing technologies.
The viability of the approach has now been well demonstrated. These signs are in use in locations with extreme environmental factors.
The success of the project can be attributed to:
- Landells' depth of experience
- familiarity with 'best-of-breed' technologies
- respecting client concerns and working collaboratively with the client to address them.
